911 into type 2

Would you like driveability with that? How about a nice, wide power / torque band? Second gear starts - no problem? 100mph - no problem? How about reliability? How about 300,000 miles and all of the above?

This conversion requires probably significantly more work than a 911 conversion, but if you have a bus that is in good condition and you want to keep it forever, this is something to consider. The engine is smaller and lighter than stock and with the radiator added to the front it moves the CG forward by about 100 pounds (axle weight) which really needs to be compensated for - I moved my toolbox from front seat to back seat and that solved it! Suspension needs good shocks of course - no changes other than the CG issue. Transaxle - I can't imagine that less than an 091 will surive long if you're a radical driver, but since the power delivery is smoother than stock, I suppose it could... Gear ratio is gonna be kinda squirrelly though! I really have to be careful when it rains, even with the tall gears of the 091.

Peak HP is *only* 135 at 5200rpm and peak torque is at 2300rpm; max revs

7200rpm and it is very content to run along at 5,000 - 6,000rpm all day long! -BaH

Well the 911 engine weighs more that the original engine. Your trans might handle it but the type 2 may sit a little lower in the rear. You also have the option of installing a properly set-up Corvair engine. They are usually self contained too and don't require you to hook up an oil tank. Some people have installed Diesel engines and even Gas engines but both of these require a radiator. You will get heat though if you want it.

Seen 2 or 3 of them, not sure what size motors they were though, and I don't think it is easy at all.

Don't know about the box, but suspension and more importantly Brakes will need upgrading.

Thanks, some very interesting replies. Some other options which I had not thought about before. The last Camper I saw with a 911 motor had the 3.6 litre version in there, and I did not think it was really true that you could drop it straight in, nevermind all the rumours. Plenty of food for thought, even though I have not bought a van yet I am getting excited and planning what I am going to do already!
