Since I want to do this right and in view that the adjusters I installed were upside down, I am going to cut them out and do it again the right way. And this time I will not forget to take pictures.......I knew there was a reason I forgot the camera last time.
Now, my next question is what is the best way to clean the axle while it is out? I want to paint it with POR15, but am not sure about cleaning the beam and getting water in the inside of it where the bearings are. As you can see in the pics, the one on my bug is pretty nasty with years of grease, dirt, cow manure, skunk residue, other critter splatters and very little surface rust. I was thinking about spraying the whole thing down with Super Clean, letting it soak a day or two and then taking it to a car wash and hosing it down really good. But I suspect that the spraying will let water get inside the beam, which cannot be good.
What steps have some of you taken to tackle this task?
