Beetle thermostat

1) When cold, is the Beetle thermostat expanded, or compressed?
2) Anyone have much of a description of the temperature range through which it starts to open the air vanes, to the temperature at which the air vanes would be fully open for all air to go through the fins ??? Ross Virgin, Toronto, Canada

When cold, it's compressed.

The thermostat for a carbed engine is rated at 65-70 degrees C (149-158 F) before it starts to open.
