Can't get my hood to open

I have a 1974 Super Beetle that has been sitting in my garage for over 5 years now. I'm starting to try and get it going again but I can't get the hood to open to get to the gas tank.

Is there a trick to getting these things to open?

Try it with 2 people.

One operates the hood release lever. The other pushes down/pulls up on the hood handle (rather violently).

My '73 std beetle has the same problem. I just open the passenger door, pull on the inside lever while yanking on the hood with the other arm. It at least gets the hood unlocked so I can use the front handle to open it. Seems to work for me until I get around to fixing it. I do have LONG arms though.....sorta like a monkey.

I went through the same trouble with my 73 std. bug and I had to remove the lever from the glove box amd pull the cable with pliers. Once I got it opened I tightened the cable and loosened the lock post. Now it works great.

Have a friend push DOWN on the lid at the handle, (relieving the locking mechanism of tension) while you pull the lock release. The said friend or you should be able to feel or hear the lock mechanism release, and then, with you still applying force to the release, the friend is to open the hood normally.

Adjust the cable and latch pin before closing it again.

I think the Bently manual says something like, take a hack saw and cut the hood handle and try and unscrew it.
