| | with Dave here... works like a charm...

An aside:

I had a clutch cable fail out in the boonies.

Warmed up the engine, got it rolling (thinking I'd drive back to town in 1st gear) as above.

Found out that if I did a bit of over speed then let off on the gas I could shift (without using the clutch) by feel.

After a bit of practice I got good enough at the game that shifting was smooth as if I were using the clutch.

I've had that happen to me before in a 69 squareback I used to own. Drove it 30 miles back home on surface streets. As long as the RPMs are "right", with practice you can up/down shift with ease. Getting started is the hard part...

Same car, different story, snapped the throttle cable right at the peddle once. I pulled it out from the carb end ( I was running duel baby dells) and ran it under the car. I pulled out the longest screwdriver I had in my tool bag and tied the broken end of the cable to the blade. With the drivers door open and the screw driver acting as a lever, I shifted with my right and throttled with my left. OMG I loved that car...

that is a skill all folks should master... having ridden motorcycles and driven vw's all my life it is like second nature.... i had to drive my chevy pickup with a loaded trailer 90 miles back to my house when the clutch linkage(no cable) broke a weld once... other than the killing the engine at lights, you'd have been hard pressed to know i was having clutch troubles...

Lost the house and all that was in it but got away with me and mine otherwise intact.

It upsets me greatly to see what the folk in the mid west are going though.

Having been through it myself I can understand and sympathize but it still hurts to watch others suffer.
