Is there supposed to be a gasket or boot on a Type 1 Oil dipstick? Mine does not have anything, but I've seen pictures in catalogs that look like there is some kind of boot.

No boot or gasket. A bellows "boot" is used on Type 3 and Type 4 engines for flexibility.

I'm prettyy sure there's supposed to be a felt gasket at the bottom of the "cup" of the stock dipstick, where it meets the dipstick tube end when it's fully seated.
Usually long gone though. You can fab your own.

I just used a rubber o-ring from plumbing stuff. It may not be necessary, but I wanted to keep things clean in the engine compartment... of course... the compartment is getting a fine mist of oil anyway... from somewhere. I THOUGHT I had fixed it about 3 times now, so I have just about given up.
