I've seen this on all 4 or 5 engines I've ever had. They all have had a notch placed between the ports at the head end to leak between the two. Visible in this shot:
Why is it there? I'm guessing it helps keep velocity going at low rpms. What would happen if I filled it with some JB weld? Would JB weld ever handle the temps? Yet another compromise because a single carb has such long runners?
