flywheel-pilot bearing

Does anybody know what goes into the center of the flywheel on an '82 Vanagon? I thought it was the pilot bearing, but it doesn't fit. Is the hole just empty? Thanks.

Be glad because that would leave the flywheel free-wheeling!-)

This must be a new flywheel or you would see indications of what might have been there before. It doesn't LOOK like anything goes there:

The wood dowel pin tool to line up the clutch. Comes to mind.

It should take the W0133-1638380 bearing which fits lots of VW/Audi applications. Are you sure you have the right part? Bill
