front shocks

I bought a 65' VW bug that has been lowered in the front with an adjustable front beam. It rides very rough with little to no front end travel. I pulled the front shocks off and they measure 9 1/2" center of hole to center of hole fully compressed, and 14" fully extended. Are these the lowered type shocks or standard ? If that is standard it might explain the very rough ride. It has very good travel without them. I think I will drive it without front shocks to see how it does. Any help would be appreciated....

that doesn't sound like a lowered shock ... it is possible that the beam is lowered all the way down as well ... i would prefer only a slight lowering with a beam and dropped spindles ... to keep most of the suspension movement .. but then again i do live on a gravel road and most of my cars proudly wear mud on the sides...

I had some short shocks on my 68 Type 1, but they were just too short as my beam was only lowered slightly.

I ran them for a couple of journeys before resorting back to standard. If you raise it up so is only slightly lower you might find you are in between standard and 'lowered', if so I'd say go with the standard shock, if they wear out they are cheaper to replace from what I recall.

One of the catalogues, might be Big boyz toyz, has a shock travel measurement table in there.

Thanks for the responses guys. I think I will just take one of the shocks to the parts store and compare it with a stock one. The car don't appear to be lowered more than a couple inches and has good travel without the shocks on it. Thanks again...
