gasoline smell

I got my 69 bug out on the road and I'm having fun with it. I even found a body shop that'll be doing the body/paint in about 2 weeks from now. Woo Hoo! :-) (boatcop, I'm gonna be pinging you about your 69 project; I spent about 90 minutes last nite reading thru your pages.)

Since I've been driving it around, I've noticed a gasoline smell that seems to be most pronounced right after a trip to the fillin station. It also happens after taking corners kinda hard, especially with a full tank.

After my last visit to the gas station, I got home and looked under the front hood for visible wet gas under the front hood. Didn't find any. Then I looked under the front of the car (under the gas tank) and also didn't see any wetness. However, I did notice that the flexible gas line coming from the gas tank did *not* have hose clamps; gotta remedy that.

The smell's strong enough to suggest that there should be some wetness to find. Somewhere.

Some background: I replaced the gas tank about 8 yrs ago since my original developed a pinhole rust hole at the bottom due to decades of condensation. Also, that fuel smell has been around for a little while; I just forgot about it while it was parked for about 4 yrs.

Any ideas where the smell/fumes could be coming from? Any tips to hunt it down?

Wondering if it could be the original cork gasket that's on the gas cap. It's lookin kinda pressed-on-hard.

TIA,

I just replaced my gas cap on my 79 Super in an attempt to stop the gas smell. Seems the o-ring had deteriorated on the old one allowing fumes from the tank to escape through the filler neck...especially so when the tank was near full and after cornering. I think it has made a big difference. GaryT

I had the exact same problem with my '69. Most of the time when you smell gas fumes in a newer bug with the external gas fill, it's the fill hoses.

I replaced the filler hose with a kit from Real Source

Part Number 306-112.

No more gas smell.

Thanks, Alan. Thanks, Gary.

I think I'll give both suggestions a try. The gas cap seal (a thick, gasket lookalike material) does look pretty thrashed where it comes in contact with the filler neck.

And, the filler hoses are original, so it'd be good to replace them too. It would suck to have gas fumes under the front, what, with all the original wiring crackling and arc'ing under there. ;-)

Alan, I wasn't able to get to that part number on their website. I'll give them a call Monday. Thanks again.
