about 6 months ago i bought a 1973 vw bug. great condition 4 a vw that hasn't had a proper run 4 a year or so. eva since iv had a 'mega probelm', i can't seem to select any gears. i have got her into gear but soon as i do it locks, clutch works etc but it doesn't stay into gear. i've looked at the gear stick thinking it might have a problem selecting, nothing wrong with that. would this be a problem with the gear box? its comfused me.

"i have got her into gear but soon as i do it locks"
Locks? What does that mean?
If it is jumping out of gear under load, the box may be fooked.

and if it truely "locks" as in like park in an automatic tranny it may have a broken shifter "fork".. and is engageing two gears at once...BTDT
Not sure what you mean here, but occasionally it's possible, if the shift rod bores are worn, to engage 2 gears at once. This usually means that you are stuck in one gear and can't use any other.
If you leave it in neutral are you really in neutral, or is it in some gear?
If it is already in some gear, then this is a gearbox internal problem. Sometimes it can be put back right and driven carefully for years, and sometimes they will do the same thing again quickly.
