My 69 bug is in the body shop. The guy there said that they'll be using Glasurit paint with the original L50B diamant blau color.
Checking out Glasurit's website, it seems like this stuff is pretty good. It may have even been the company that originally supplied the original paint.
Any comments, criticisms? Anything I should watch out for, to ask for?
My '69 was painted in the original L50B (Diamond Blue) using single stage Dupont, mixed up by my local auto parts store. Exact match to the interior, which wasn't repainted.
The results were superb with no fading, chalking or blemishes after 2 years in the Arizona sun. Glasurit may be a better quality paint, but a bit pricey. If cost is an issue, you can go with the Dupont for way less money.
I know all about your bug... I've read thru your project pages a couple of times now. I think the only difference between yours and mine is that you have a sunroof.
Your pages are where I learned about the diamond blue color, so thanks for including that. I then did some google searches of this newsgroup and found a bunch of other details about paint types, etc. Speedy Jim seems to know a bit about paint in addition to his electrical skills.
Oh, and wrt the cost of that stuff, the shop quoted me the price for the complete body and paint, and *later* told me that they'll be using the Glasurit. US$90 a pint, they say is their cost. Wow. Wonder how much it takes to cover a bug.
Anyway, pics to come at some point. Here's one from '99 when I thought I could do bodywork. That bare metal section got real rusty real quick!

In '69 Glasurit would have been the original paint used on your vehicle. Excellent paint for its day. Do be aware that the formulation of the paint has changed over the years. The original was a single stage product (formula 22 IIRC). Today you are going to get a clearcoat also.
Another thing to think about is this.............people get all hung up on the color (for obvious reasons) and tend to ignore other paint qualities. For example, if you could go back to '69 and look at new VW in the dealer parking lot you would immediately notice that the paint seemed to be quite thick. Almost a coating rather than just a color. Had my 1970 Bus painted using the Sikkens System about a year ago. Cost a small fortune but it came out with that "coat" quality which made it look as if it just rolled out of the paint shop at Hannover.
