Green splitty found! Headlights and other questions.

Hehe, can´t believe it. This morning when doing a job in a rural area here, i came across a green splitty, no back windows, so a panelvan. The headlights are missing, and there are 2 round holes with a cut out on each side, as well the lower blinkers and back lights are gone. Beautiful white steering wheel, engine gone, tranny there and entire wheels, suspention, hubcaps... all there. Now, someone told me there are certain mercedes lights the same as a splitty headlight, is that true? As well, what about the other lights, all lights are missing, any substitute? Thank god all windows are in and not cracked!

I don't know about the Mercedes thing, maybe a custom fit?

The holes on the top are for the blinkers, They are usually reffered to as "fried eggs" not to terribly expensive. Rear tailights are actually pretty cheap aftermarket, they were used early 60's (I think 62') right up to 71' They are an easy find. I've seen them like $16 US per assy (not Hella of course but good enough if your on a budget)

If it has the holes above the tailight for reverse lights, that would make it a

67' most likely, those are fairly cheap to aquire too unless you want perfection. OF course all these area are except the headlights. you could simply fill them in and use just about anything if you wanted to customize it. Allthough OG really seems to fit the type 2's the best. Didn't you pickup a splitty or find one to get parts off of before? Maybe you can rob stuff off that.

I've got a 66' panel, so far it's been my favorite VW I've had!

They do fit, but are a lot harder to find than the VW parts :-)

From what I know of Mercedes, those might be the headlights of the LP truck range (both bonneted and cab-over-engine) they made in the late 1950s and 1960s. Can't think of anything else they made with round headlights set at an angle like that.

Airhowlingly yours, Erik.
