Have a tech question

Hi, I am looking to build the fastest bug in the area, and I will do it! Thinking about a type 4 block and a turbo, has anyone converted the flat to an up right? Also what type of turbo is good?

It is not possible to convert a flat to an upright.

Quick, go tell Jake Raby before the poor guy wastes any more time building such engines!

Yes it is and it has been done for over 10 years, if not 20 already in Europe.

I did my own according to the book published by Joe Cali, and I had great success.

As Karl said, there are kits sold now for the conversion, and the best one by far is the DTM he linked you to. When Joe Locicero passed away, the whole business eventually was taken over by Jake Raby of Aircooled Technology. Jake has put in tons of work and thought into it, and I bet it has gotten even better. Jake is THE authority in the US (and pretty much anywhere in the world) for T4 conversions. You should contact him or join the discussion forums at

where Jake has his own forum. Spend some time reading the old messages there to educate yourself on what's been going on and what all is involved.

Hi Jan,

When did Joe Cali passed away? I bought conversion manual from him earlier this year.

Here is Joe's website

regardless of whichway you decide to go on t4 conversion it's must have and a goodinvestment.

good t4 conversion forum can be found at

Also check out this year issues of hotvw there is a good step by step article on the t4 buildup. Honestly I don't think you would need to go to the extreem of runing turbo. If you build an engine with over 2L displacement, t1 should be pretty quick, besides the point of being a daily driver. Stock 2L with lightened flywheel is a very good step up from 1600 and should last.

Good luck, Ant> Hairy kirjoitti:

Yes, I know. I was just *attempting* to be a smartass as it'll still be a "flat" four.

Joe Cali is alive and well, Joe Locicero like Jan stated died a few years ago...

Not Cali, but Locicero. A good friend and mentor, with whom I spent quite a bit of time discussing the T4 conversion, life, women, etc..

Lol, I get you now.

That would be an interesting project... hehehehe.. converting a boxer 4 to an inline 4, while still using most of the core components..... :D

Did you know that one of the early engine prototypes or scetches for a beetle engine was a "star" configuration, like in some airplanes?

just an FYI, the aircooled technology forum at shoptalkforums.com is/will be? closed....Jake is opening his own forums on his servers.....the posts will be available/archived for some time to come for reading/learning pleasure... (Jan, i know you are aware of this, just attatching to your response to let others know)

Some experimental airplane builders cut the flat 4 in half and run a flat 2.
