well hell why didn't you say so...i bet the vw handles ten times better than the average war tank too....but i try to keep the apples out of the orange bowl....

That sounds like a wet dream. There was a Pinto wagen here in town with a 390 stuffed into it. It screamed.

I drove across the country in 81, and thought it did not get pretty until I got to Nebraska. Only the last ninety miles from Reno to Sacramento are nice. The rest is well ... lets be nice, and call it "scenic desert".
I could be very wrong on the engine size but I know that is where the carb came from. I believe it is a mechanical advance for the second barrel. I'll get it out tomarrow and check it out. Dennis

Well, I guess back in 1978, I (19yrs old) did. Traded my 65 stang for it in West Palm Beach, Fl even swap. It was a 1972 with a 400 Olds motor, 350 Manual valve body Auto, and cut 9", rite off the strip. Back then Fla had inspections, I took it to the inspection station(they were drive thru), open headers, slicks and all. Got my 30 day temp inspection(along with a very, very long repair list). And for one month had a hell of a time. Then my brothers took the car to Pa, and one of them rolled it by slamming second going around a mountain curve trying to lift the front wheels. My oldest brother was not happy as he was the one who bought it. Jim Ilambert wrote: Who needs a V8 Vega?
Ok yes there was a pinto in my family in younger days so I do have experiance with them. I had 3 real close friends killed in one and the car didn't look as bad as my 73 super did in Germany when I was hit and the engine was riped out of the bug. my son was less then a yr old then and neither my son ,freind or I got as much as a scratch on us. Then theres Gareth with his 66 beetle, He was T-boned 3 weeks after we restored his car, I had pics of the carafter the accident, he got banged up but wasn't seriously hurt. and as far as reliability, again I say the ones that had the german engines were fine the body fell apart around it. Being an old street rod builder I really like the bigger Holly carbs on a v-8 but please there are so many better carbs for an aircooled flat 4.
Pretty in Nebraska ? I must have missed something all these years. Flat and dull here. And cold.

Nebraska was green (late June), and much better than hot dry salt-flat-lake beds of California, Nevada, Utah. Followed by brown short grass prairie of Wyoming. The truck-stop girls wern't much to look at either.
