Ignition Timing.

Hi, I have read that the lobe for No3 cylinder on some dizzys is retarded by a couple of degrees. Is this true with a 009? I ask because I am looking at fitting my Sparkrite electronic ignition unit but I think this will have the four firing points equally spaced around the magnetic ring. Will this cause any problems?

Thanks,

Tony.

this would be true on some factory pre-1970 distributors...(before the "new" "doghouse" oil coolers were introduced, and therefore moved the cooler out of the line of cooling air for the number 3 cylinder)

no. the 009 was never installed on a street driven vw aircooled engine from the factory

No. No aftermarket distributor ever retarded the number 3 lobe. Assuming the rest of your engine is in good shape -- seals, cooling system like flaps and thermo or all there -- you should be fine with evenly spaced dizzy lobes.

Although I am not sure when the #3 retard stopped, I know it started for the

65 model on not just Type 1, but also 2 & 3. The Type 3 already had a separate air feed and exhaust for the oil cooler, so this suggests that it was not to do with the pre-doghouse cooler on the Type 1 & 2. Maybe it was more to do with the manifold pre-heat running from right to left, or #3 having a longer exhaust tube.

....I'll have it be known, that I have *never* stopped!!!

may be Peter, and i am sorry if i have stated an untruth...it has always been my understanding that as the displacement grew on the engines that they produced more heat(definitely expected) and the cooling was the same...when they reached a certain level(which *I* *thought* was1300cc's) the oil cooler was taking too much of the cooling air for number three and "preheating" it with the waste heat from the oil cooler....again sorry if that is incorrect...

same...when

You may not be wrong, or perhaps partially right. I don't know for sure, but I suspect there is more to it. According to VW, the 1200 40hp also received the same #3 treatment in 1965, so it sounds like a fix for something that had been there a while, or at least since they moved away from the 36hp unit. One of the modifications VW made, after the introduction of the doghouse, was to reverse the pre-heat flow, so as to balance up the temperatures in 3 & 4 with 1 & 2. Not to mention the dual pre-heat and so on. The later (European) heater boxes had the same length of manifolding (for each side), but Gene Berg did say they used to be longer for 3, and so trapped more heat. It all starts to sound fairly convincing after a while but maybe there is more still?
