The weenie little glass fuel filters are about three bucks. The 4'' diameter metal machined filters are closer to $90. What's in between, and easy to mount?

White plastic ones, both of inline universal fit and different configurations on the in/outlet for special makes/models, choose a larger one you find suitable to fit where you want to locate it. The best type filter are the marine aplications with a water separator and exchangable filter insert for the fuel side. Somewhat pricy, but much better then the El-Cheapo universial automotive stuff.

................That sounds like a great idea.
A friend had a water seperator on his car, you'd never believe how much water that thing trapped.
Whatever you choose to use, secure it in place so it doesn't bounce around. Get the weight off of the fuel lines. Make a simple holder for it out of sheetmetal, just a simple strap. Bolt it to the fan shroud with one of the existing flap assembly bolts.

I put them there, on the suction side, held in place with a metal clamp.
