interchangeble 1200cc- 1500cc

Can I use parts off an 1200cc engine to rebuild an 1500cc(H) engine? I am thinking on the connecting rods and crank (69mm) ....

Thanks, Dave

Hi Dave,

If memory served the 1200 had a 67mm crank, so it won't be interchangeable!

Case, crank, rods, pushrods, lifters and possibly the cam are interchangeable. Check (or have a machine shop check for you) the crank for wear. The journals should have almost a mirror finish. Check the center journal for wear and check the crank for straighteness. The rods would normally need to be reconditioned by a specialised VW machine shop (need to be straightened and rebushed). Cam lifters should be refaced if you plan to reuse them if they are slightlly worn. If they are worn too much, you cannot reuse them. Use the later case of the two, or the one that is in better condition if the other is damaged.

64mm. And yes it is, as long as yo utake the flywheel too and figure out a rod&piston combination that ould work with that combo. :)

interchangeable!

My apologises, I stand corrected! Surely though with the 64mm crank you won't get a true 1500 cc engine, it'll be smaller. won't it?

Yes :)

Some race classes set limitations to displacement, and in certain cases it's seen as a good route to build a short stroke, big bore engine that revs fast, and high.

Other than that I see no real point in it, if not for entertainment purposes or with the intention to learn something by doing it first hand.
