Most Similar Bug to 71 Bus

If a fellow - say me, for example - has been working on his 71 bus for a while and is becoming somewhat familiar with its various bits and pieces. . . and if that fellow's wife was kinda interested in having a bug around . . . which year bugs might that fellow find to be the most similar to his bus in terms of similar bits and pieces, and general level of technology?

My pick for a daily driver would be a 69. It's the first year with "irs" rear suspension (U.S. spec). It's got 4-lug wheels which don't warp as easy as the wide-5s. The original engine would have been a 1500, but a 1600 is a great choice. In general the later you go the more complex the wiring gets.

Anything from say, 67 to 2000-something. A.k.a. The "late model" beetle. Don't know about the fuel injection however, it might bring some new stuff to learn.
