My bug had it's first accident

Earlier tonight a friend of mine at work backed into my bug with his dodge stealth. While his car was unscathed mine took a good hit on the passenger door and quarter panel. I'm headed to the body shop tomorrow to get some estimates and get to his insurance company quick, but I'd thought I'd post the pics for all too see and mabye provide a little advice on getting her back into shape. Thanks.

,....its a little bigger panel than necessary...but I do not know of a smaller genuine VW panel available for that section, and the aftermarket panels suck!!

wow-we....how fast was he going backwards?...anywho, i would reccomend that the door post be cut out and replaced along with the quarter panel....the post that is there *could* be fixed, but may require some filler and at a door is not the best place for it...door vibrations and slaming can loosen the filler....your best bet is to go with the panel Gary has kindly posted a link to, and probably a new-to-you door....now smack that friend of yours in the back of the head... Just an update, I had some quotes done by some reputable auto shops who know bugs. I have located an OEM german quarter panel, the whole thing, and a whole new door from aircooled.net. The quotes I got for it ranged from 2,500 - 4,000!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have already filed a claim with his insurance and the adjuster should be coming out in the morning. I just hope that they don't total it out! I really want to get it all back together without body putty of I can. Thanks for your posts! They make me feel a little better.

Jon, where are you located? I have the panel you need, inside out, and it's in good shape.

Not as large as the one that was posted either, but everything below the window is there, and I feel good about a good shop doing the body work with this much if they know what they're doing. I have it for use on one that just "may" need it. I wouldn't mind letting it go if you are interested.................no price for the part, just shipping if needed and of course , if it's local, you can just come and get it.

I'm in Garland, TX. 75041.

It's is not, it isn't ain't, and it's it's, not its, if you mean it is. If you don't, it's its. Then too, it's hers. It isn't her's. It isn't our's either. It's ours, and likewise yours and theirs. -- Oxford University Press, Edpress News

Don't let the insurance co. screw you. Remind them this is a CLASSIC/antique car. Don't let them use aftermarket repair panels (they don't fit & will rust out quickly), since you've already found OEM parts. Get values from anyplace you can, on cars of comparable year & condion (Hemmings.com is a good place). Try not to let them total it, as they're not going to want to pay anything much at all. If they want to total it, make them let you buy it back for a very cheap price. ~ Paul aka "Tha Driver"

Thanks for the offer, but I'm going to try to get that whole panel from aircooled.net. I am in Joplin MO though, if anybody else on this newsgroup is anywhere near SW Misery. I heard from the claims office today and they only want to give me $1500 topound out the rear quarter, fill it with puddy, and get me a used door. There is hope though, the body shop I am going to work with is pretty adamant about getting me a new door, and replacing the entire rear quarter panel(the bodyshop's owner's first car was a beetle). With his help I think we can get the insurance company to work with us and get the job done right. All this has got me thinking of pulling the engine(it will be my first experience pulling one) and fixing oil leaks, cleaning it up, etc. If anyone has any advice or anything to offer it would be greatly appreciated.

anywho, i would reccomend

but, my Beetle had been hit in the same area. Sometimes the door pops open when I am driving. Replacing the post seems to be the only answer.

Maybe they can give you ther $1500.00 and you can pay the rest to get it done the way you want.

There is an aircooled VW salvage yard in Siloam Springs, Arkansas. That is sort of close to Joplin. Sorry, I can not remember the name of it.
