Convertible Top Replacement

It's time for me to replace the top of my 72 SB convertible. I purchased the car from a kid that didn't know what he was doing and got tired of the project. Most items were installed wrong and backwards. The top was one of those things he screwed up. I'm hoping that the wooden bows are still good. What should I be looking for while removing the old top? How can you tell if some items are still usable? Is there a website or link with info how to install one or give me directions what to look for?

Thanks!!

I thought that you were the expert on everything. You can handle a damn top for a super. Damn man! That's right I'm back for your quarterly ass-whooping again.

Convertable Specialities has a video (1971 Vert) that should answer all your questions. Call them. They advertise in Hot VWs. 73 and on Supers have a steel front bow and is a different situation especially if it is rusted beyond reuse. I did my 74 and it turned out great and Conv. Specialities were a great help with all needed parts including a used rear window metal frame.

I replaced the top on my 73 super - including the padding and new headliner I took my time, but moved it tlaong and it came out great. My wood around the rear window was shot and received a replacement from Chucks - he persuaded me not to use a wood frame but a hard rubberpiece- which will never rot. It has worked well so far ( ~ year). Also replaced the wooden bow with no prob. Chuck was always very helpful with tips when I needed them and oftened confirmed, yes, I was doing it right. I also bought a video from C. Specialities which helped a bit. Ordered some parts from Specialities, which I thought was a little better than Chucks parts ( ordered identical parts from him also) I hate saying that as I really liked Chucks - so it's my opinion. I thought it was going to be harder, but went well. POR_15'd my frame while it was exposed. Narley-Dave, If your frame is really messed up or needs some work, you can send it to Chuck's and he'll do a great job on it I'm sure. But I think it would be obvious if your frame was out of whack - but if you need to I would order a bow from chucks and ask him how to center it properly on the two arms to which it bolts to. For the pads and other items for being reusable - it is pretty much self evident. Again, it's good to get the video. I did not check out yet the webiste that was offered above. I suggest the video cause it's good to see in action how things are done.

If you ahve any questions feel free to email me

Good luck Matt S.

Thanks for your input. I called them up and they are putting together a package deal for the top, the bows, padding, headliner, cables, boot, and upper rubber seals. (and video!!!)

Thanks
