Need Help Starter Bench Wiring ??

Hope someone is on right now.. I been working on this for 3 days, and it is getting dark. I have to pack up soon.

Ok, I need some serious help. I see Jan has posted in previous questions how this is done, and also found pictures by other RAMVA members.. I can't for the life of me wire a starter on a bench that spins. I can make the piece pop out, but it doesn't turn...

Is their something more than the clip on wire connection, and 2 bolt connections?? Please treat this questions answer like a kindergarten child. I built an engine.. I know it will run.. The heap I bought doesn't have a starter wired up.. so I put wires on those 3 posts of the starter solenoid.. try everything on a battery, it pops out.. but doesn't spin the motor.. I have 3 starters, my starters are not bad.

I understand one is a +.. and then bridge.. it wont work unless I ground the other post.. and it only pops out and stays out. Where does a tranny strap go, is this the missing key?

Please anyone a simple diagram will help greatly, would love to hear this engine run. It is allready installed, so buying a bench starter is not going to help at this point.

BUT...........the starter will NOT spin because the stock VW starter for 4-spd has NO support bearing at the front (pinion) end! It MUST be mounted to the bellhousing to work! (OK, it may attempt to spin but will grind against its own Field poles.)

(I had to put all those qualifiers in there because some smart ass will point out that the autostick starter doesn't need to be mounted; it has its own bearing.)

Haha, that is the exact same picture I downloaded. When I found it, I thought I had it made. I can't get it to work. I swear that I have the starter installed. Please explain the tranny strap to me, I don't have one. Where does this ground go?

Maybe my starter is bad, after all.. from benching it without being installed in the tranny??

Yes, it should spin the engine.

Dragenwagen has a page ehre that's very good:

The slolenoid has 2 jobs: It closes the main contacts for the starter motor. It physically "throws" the pinion gear into the flywheel teeth.

The tranny ground strap is at the front of the nosecone. Itallows the heavy battery current to flow to the starter frame (ground).

And here is what you need for "Ignition wires" to start the thing:

I keep an old bell housing from a type 2. It is great to spin an engine on the ground to check the compression and it is handy to check a starter. i run the ground strap right to the battery. I also install the ford type extra solenoid in every car to eliminate sticky solenoid syndrome. works for me !
