Need opinions: Would you buy a salvaged vehicle?

This is a follow up to my orginal post. I have learned something since about the ins and outs of junking a car and then having it retitled. I guess once it has the salvage title it has it for life? Or if I hang onto it does it eventually vacate the DMV database and then I can file for a new title or does it stay in forever? Anyone know? Assuming I am stuck with the salvaged title, does that destroy the value on a old VW? The damage really is not that bad, just the right rear clip, fender and the decklid are wiped out. The car is an original family owned vehicle, no rust, no other collision damage, original engine, comes with paperwork, etc, so it has a lot of positives, but the "Salvaged" thing is throwing me for a loop. Opinions please!

JMHO If the vehicle is yours to keep, and you buy it WAY below it's true value.........Be Happy!

If you are trying to sell it, make sure you can repair it and keep the costs WAY below the car's value and sell it lower than wholesale price and ..........Be Happy!

I have heard of states that issue titles and salvage/rebuilt is no where on the title. Of course I have heard of people cleaning up the titles that way too! I am not fond of 'hidden' defects or problems or mistruths!

Your state may need to give you info on what to do!

Ive built salavged cars for 4 years and did restorations on VWs for many years and depending on the quality of work, any car can be fixed back to factory specs.

Have someone that knows cars look at it first.

...yeah but switching VIN's on someone's vehicle that you didn't pay for then giving it back to someone else as their "restored" VW doesn't exactly count.. ;-)

Once a salvage title has been issued for the vehicle, it stays.

It depends on the buyer. It might spook some to see a salvage title, and others might take it in stride.

I've rebuilt several cars in the past. I don't do it myself for a living, but I might in the future. As long as the car is fixed right, there should be no problems. If someone dosen't like the salvage title, it's up to them. As for an old VW; heck I bought Annie (my yellow bug) totaled; it had the frontend smashed in but no frame damage. This was 30 years ago & even then the '63 bug was worth so little they totaled it. I made a baja out of it, replacing the front sus. assy., had it back on the road within a week & have been enjoying it ever since! (Well untill recently; it's been sitting for awhile now 'cause my life was screwed up by the &#%&*$@ THEIVES! - see my website
