Original Tire size on a 69 bug

Jun 13, 2006 3 Replies

Can anyone tell me the original tire size for a 69 beetle? The wheels and tires that were on it when I got it were some really wide ( rubbing in the back even ) and 15 X 4.5 steel wheels. I think I'm gonna use the same wheels, but I wanna get something close to the original size tires so the speedo is correct.

Thanks Jason

I have 165\70-R15s on my '68 without issues.

Sneaks '68 T1

Stock size was 5.60-15, bias ply. Radial conversion is 155R15. Most people put 165R15's on instead, as it is (or was) easier to find. Another tire gaining popularity is 195/65R-15. It's inbetweeen a 155 and 165. FYI: If a size listed does not include the aspect ratio (percentage of sidewall height to width, the middle numbers), it's is common to imply that is an 80 series tire. Here's a good tire size calculator to determine rolling speed, and it lets you see the differences in height and width.

It was 155/75 or 80 x15. Common replacement is 165/75x15 or 195/65x15 or

185/70x15. Try Coker Tire for OEM sizes.
