OT: Flame Wars...........Oops.

On June 30th 2004, I went to work.( This is not unusual on aWednesday.)I usually sit down at a desk out in the shop and do the paperwork fromthe previous day, and did so just the same as always, this particularday. Now, I typically get done with my paperwork before 8:00. This day wasno different in this regard. Finished up, about 7:45am............Noproblem, right? Wrong. Well, in the sense that there would be no problem anyway.Since it has been raining in almost record amounts for the wholemonth, it was really humid and stuffy in the shop, so I Figured it wastime to utilize the exhaust fan in the shop wall, to pull some A/C airinto the shop through ( yeah, *through ) the garage door next to thedesk, so I got up and went to turn it on...............So far so good.Got to the area where all the fan switches were and found that theywere already switched on, and thought "must be a breaker blown" youknow,...... thinking that maybe some lightning had maybe caused asurge and kicked some breakers. So, right next to the swithes for thefans sits the breaker box, 440 3 phase, 6' tall breaker box. there arethree, so I figured start with the closest one, and check 'emout.............processing the thought anyway.Upon opening the first box it was obvious which breaker was kicked, soI flicked it toward the "on" position to check it out, sure enough, itwas opened by a fault. That seemes normal to me, as I have reset somany circuit breakers in my life, I can;t recall a small part of themnowadays.........................I pushed the breaker back to resetit, and felt it click,...............once again very normal to me, andas habits be habits, went ahead and pushed the switch to the onposistion ...........BAM! power decided to find ground quickly and loudly. A Deafening bangas the flames rushed out around the face plate. Fortunately, notthrough it.The security camera got more of it but this shot was let out of thebag long enough to make it all over the internet, so Sheryl emailed...

Well, Allen, I shoulda bought that lottery ticket, but having so much to do I didn't even think about it...............Hope there's no next time to try the full effect of luck.................

The guys who have seen the video said I was already kind of looking away from the breaker box when I pushed it, that alone probably saved me from the flash blindness.

Always remember,..............one hand in pockey,...............no shockey.

Thanks to all for the good thoughts! I am always going to remember that feeling of fear..................shock (emotional shock) and will have something to reflect on forever to thank my lucky stars for.

( well,.................That And My sweetheart of a wife who has just been beside herself with a very odd, but understandable kind of worry )
