I have to agree on that one, not only from all walks of life, but also 'cause the internet spreads all over the globe. Different nations do have different ideas ánd values. Still there is a thick line between beïng an ass and beïng understanding... :)
People should still try to act their age, and disagree in a civilized manner.. It's called common courtesy and manners. Some of the stuff that people say from the safety of their homes, would get their ass kicked in real life. And some even think that it can never happen because they are "invisible" on the internet... (wrong, lol). I know cases where some poor bastard got visitors from an internet forum, against their own will.. some got a lesson in manners, some got their car or parts stolen. I would still be careful with what I say online. The world is getting very very small. The people you insult online may live in your town. :)
..........I'm not that impressed with politeness and manners sometimes. It depends though. Honest people should be able to interact with each other while maintaining a respectful and polite relationship with each other. I use my real name because I don't want the temptation of saying something that I wouldn't want to be held responsible for in real life. Occasionally, someone comes along like Mario who doesn't deserve the title - honest person. I don't want to spend my entire time on RAMVA calling him out but appreciate that others do so occasionally and I might take my turn wacking him here again if it seems approriate (to me). If anyone here thinks that I'm a bad person like Mario, they can say so in whatever way they think is appropriate as well. That's what USENET is like sometimes.....good people exposing and critisizing bad people........................LOL
i agree with you Jan....and believe me, i have never said anything on this or any forum that i would not say in person in the same situation. when people are rude and nasty i will be the same...in print or in person.....(luckily) most people don't step into the "rude and nasty" area when they are in person....
Flames are a proud tradition of the internet. I enjoy them but only when I know they are just made in fun and all participants are willing. When they become nasty, I abandon the thread as they are just negative.
Whether one treats everyone as a friend or enemy won't make a whole lof of difference in the end because we don't really know eachother and probably will never meet eachother. To be nasty is like cutting a person off on the turnpike - we'd never do that when in a grocery line. Is this group like a turnpike or grocery store to us? I prefer to treat everyone as they are my friend unless they prove to me they are not. No one here has done that. I've never had commercial dealings with Mario but have heard things. Whether these things are true of not are besides the point for me in the context of joking about flux capacitors, for instance.
He seems like a very capable mechanic, very willing to help - maybe the stuff we've heard about started as a total misunderstanding that's now carried into a feud between two people, both thinking they were wronged. Good people do bad things sometimes. Maybe he is a dishonest person IRL but in reality any of you could be total criminals - should I treat all of you badly because you /may/ be dishonest?
I could understand one not wanting to deal with Mario at any level because of the situation, but don't understand the near stalking that's going on.
As Jan states, is that where we want this group to go? It will turn people off to where they won't even lurk anymore. We're all not local to eachother so I see this group as a club house and informal club meeting - we don't have to contantly talk ACVWs and can joke and roast eachother but imagine if a real club allows fist fights to start? Unless it is fight club, the club will dissolve quickly.
just my 2c -- set the flaming gun to stun, please :) Remco
Watch it Remco. I started flirting with a female Ramva reader in the
90's and look at me now. I am married to her in real life :D
Not all of us are local to each other, but some of us are living in the same area and there HAVE been Ramva get-togethers in the past, in real life. I organized one in Miami even. I've met a dozen or so people face to face from here. You never know.
Well played -- congratulations again, now that the ball has been chained to your leg. Your flirting days are over, buddy! :)
I wish that was the case up here - it would sure be nice to meet up at a diner someplace sometime. I've talked to people at AC shows and stuff, but they are not on this group from what I can tell.
In lieu of all that, to me this place is kind of a ACVW club of sorts
- we all have similar interests but we don't always talk technical, have fun, ramble on about stuff and roast eachother because of it. All personalities come through clearly and form the spirit of a club. For instance, where would this place be without Speedy's help, Bob's great sermons (where is he anyway??), Travis' humor, Chris' dead on comments and your royal presence? :) Let's not break what we have here.
This group may not be as large as it once was, but we still have the best people right here. Back in the day (7-8 years ago) this was the only place and then a lot of the web based boards opened and some found a new online home there.
Darwin was right? Is that natural selection at work or what? :)
Seriously, I've lurked this group for a while before I had a bug - and you're right: it was hopping then. It would sure be nice to get that same crowd on here again..

If I remember the biggest draw away from Ramva was when shoptalkforums.com opened. I have not been there is a long time, but it is probably still growing strong. Thesamba and cal-look are also popular forums where some of the people are now that used to post here.
