Fried motherboard here (what a hassle!), need a new computer myself. Joern, please let us know how the Mini works out.
That will keep it on topic :)
Hooked it up last night only, darn thing will not let me connect to the net.. I'm using a cable modem.. Have asked for help on a Norwegian group just now, hopefully someone will now my ISP's needs..
How did you fry your Mutha board?? Did you have it up and running before it died? Mine is a 1.42, 80, 512... A bit more noisy than I had hoped for, fan runs consistantly, ILife 05 took a long time to load, much more than that I have not gotten to play with it.
I'll let you know hove things go after work, have not slept much tonight, so it's going to be one of those days....

Your cable ISP uses the ETHERNET MAC (Media Access Control) identity of your old PC as an indication that YOU are YOU... Now that you have a different MAC address because your ethernet chip is different, it thinks you are an imposter.
You need to contact them, and either get them to just "reset" your account or you have to tell them your new MAC address. That's how it is done over here. Your Mac mini MAC address will either be on a sticker on the case, or you can get at it via the Apple System Profile utility that you can launch... It's called "System Profiler" and is in the Utilities folder within your Applications folder (go right to Utilities from your "Go" menu in the Finder).
It's not a Mac vs. PC difference... if you had bought a PCI ethernet card and moved your cable to the new connector on the back of your old PC, you'd be in the same boat.
Another trick that might work... Hook up the old machine, get connected, then do a RELEASE via the command line program in Windows for this purpose... I can't recall the name of the DOS program that you launch...
Then immediately shut down and hook up the Mac mini... Your ISP might be set up to automatically now accept the new MAC identity. Otherwise, it'll take a call to their techies to reset their router tables to accept your new MAC address as belonging to your account.
The easiest way to avoid this hassle is to have a cheap 4 port router/firewall between the cable modem and any computers you own. You can set the router MAC address to be a clone of your old PC one. Heck you can even plug in BOTH computers at the same time and be online simultaneously. At that point, the cable company sees just ONE MAC address even if two computers are surfing the internet.
c:\>ipconfig /release
Windows 2000 IP Configuration IP address successfully released for adapter "Local Area Connection 3"
That will release the IP address you got from your ISP, so that it is free for them to hand out to someone else but is no guarantee that your ISP will "forget" your MAC address when this happens. Whether or not this will work will depend entirely on how your ISP is set up to monitor and maintain their MAC address associations.

It must have overheated and shorted out. Lots of dust in there... I guess I'll have to add a thorough spring cleaning to all the anti-hijack and spybot chores. I took it to the shop and the kid couldn't get any response from the CPU.
Fortunately I was able to save my stuff. I put the hard disk in an external enclosure with power supply and usb connection. I/O Magic. Works great.
Mine is a 1.42, 80,
That certainly is adequate for my needs.
Good luck!
Thanks!

Hi again!
I am now on the mini! Had to unplugg the modem for a while, have been looking for a news reader on this thing, but nada..???????
Downloaded MT-Newswatcher as you recomended, sorry but I find an absolute waiste! Horrible layout and all these separate windows floating about...
Is there anything that works like the news agent in Outlook express out there? Find it hard to understand I could not locate one in OSX, but there you go..
