Pulling the distributor's driver-gear

To All:

Although VW offered a special tool for this task the after-market copies are often so poorly made that they simply don't work.

Fortunately, that's not a problem. Because you'll find an even better tool that costs a lot less hanging on the wall at your local hardware store. It's a pair of 'pop-up pliers.' It's intended purpose is to reach down inside the neck of a broken pop-up lawn sprinkler and pull the pipe up to where it can be worked on.

The pliers are the type that OPEN when you squeeze them. The outside of the jaws come to a horizontal point that stabs into the plastic pipe.

The reason the things work on the VW driver-gear is because those sharp points are flat on the bottom, allowing them to be locked into the edge of the recess machined into the top of the driver-gear.

I think I paid about two dollars for my pair... in the late 1970's.

Remember that the driver-gear has to rotate slightly as it is withdrawn (and when inserted, too). That's because the gear teeth have to mesh with the bronze scroll gear on the crankshaft.
