Quickie Q: Oil Cooler Foam Pads?

Is there something that a hardware-store/FLAPS might sell that can be used to replace the foam pads on the fore and aft of the doghouse-style oil cooler? Mine are shredding and I expect they perform the important duty of making sure that cool air blows /through/ the cooler and not around it.

I've used foam adhesive tape use to insulate windows, found on our local hardware store.

most weatherstripping foam *may* work, however you need to take into consideration how much heat the foam can handle before it melts...as long as tthe engine is running it may not be a problem, but when you shut it down the heat can be soaked up by the foam.... JT

The padding and the adhesive both need to withstand the heat and thermal cycling. Anyone know how hot the oil cooler gets in a doghouse? (Probably max service temp of the engine I expect.) With that information I can probably find suitable stuff in McMaster-Carr and add it to the NG's pool o' How-To's.

That leads to another issue: The Hoover Bit! Time to resurrect the thread for our mutual benefit. And while we are at it, bets concerning the most often missing pieces of cooling tin. It's amazing how many are not in the 'average' rebuilt engine.

(Speaking of heat - I'm steaming a bit because my vacation departure was put off a few days - so I'm still heeeeere!)

I have foam that I have used for over 15 years to replace the similar part on type 3 oil coolers. In that time I've not seen it break down at all.

I don't know the exact size and shape that you need, but I could cut you a piece if you sent me the dimensions. It cuts easily with scissors and can be glued down with any gasket compound.

It's relatively cheap, and very important.
