radio question for standard '69 bug

I went to Circuit City today to buy and have them install an am-fm-cd playing radio. They told me they'd have to cut the radio hole in the dash larger and this was for a cheap radio.

Nuts on that. Anyone know any brands that have am/fm/cd radios that will fit in the existing radio hole?

Many thanks! David

.................There aren't any. You can hang it under the dash or put it in the glove box or cut the opening.

the real source and rmmw's have these in their catalogs. they may not have ones that play cds.

..............I may have spoken out of ignorance. As you say Paul, there is an in-dash CD player listed on page 103 of the current RealSource catalog that supposedly fits a 'classic bug'. This Pioneer unit is not any different looking from their pic than any of the other units that are commonly sold now a days. I'd question them very carefully over the telephone about whether this unit can really be installed without cutting the dash.

I have, in the past, installed some that the "nose" of the radio would fit through without cutting. However, the vent work directly behind, had to be modified.........................I can see how it may be possible, but not likely, without some sort of modification to the car.

Tyr and get a shaft style radio for the dash, and then use a CD Changer you can mount under the seat.

There *are* some - usually cheap aftermarket types, the style with the two knobs and the centre faceplate. Radio's from '70s DAF cars fit also...

IIRC there was a company in the UK selling them, for 20 quid..

In one of the few concessions to high tech, I replaced my car's Sapphire with a Sony XR2100. I can't tell what the dimensions are, but to install it I didn't have to chop the dash, only file the face-plate opening a bit larger all 'round. This model (1994) is AM/FM/Cassette. Upgrades of the XR2100 might have the cd function. Check with Sony.

Think Radio-Shack has a cheap model that will fit. Some of the "modern" makes does have models designed for older cars.

this will be my first post- but i have dealt with this issue- the problem is that most all indash cd players are the "din" style chassis- and not the 2 shaft and knob style-

i would recommend a system with a remote changer- and a decent 2 shaft headunit- they are still around but fewer and fewer- the best of both worlds- or....

as was suggested above mount the unit in the glove box - i have done that and it is handy- it leaves the stocker in place and saves the dash- while hiding the new unit away from thieves-

good luck-
