my 57 started making this horrible grinding sound. You can hear it,

One place that could do that is the generator and fan. Busted generator bearings or fan rubbing the shroud. Troubleshoot by taking off the=20 fan belt and rotating the generator by hand (engine off ofcourse). = Rubbing fan would propably give you an uneven grind once or twice at each = revolution and generator bearing will probably have a constant noise.

If this fails, at least you have ruled out the generator/fan = possibility.

Look for rubbing where rear tin meets the bottom (crankshaft) pully, that can create sounds like a gang of cats at war.

i have tried to rock the fanshroud and it did not make a difference,i should note that at idle it is not constant when i put it in gear and drive it is terribaly loud.?? thanks for the thoughts so far russ

You have TOO MUCH POWER: the rear tires are slipping and screaming ;)

Jan

Check at the bottom pulley, not just at the fan shroud.

Hey Russ. Since the noise deminishes in 3rd and 4th, have you checked your throw out bearing lately? Could easily make the noise you are describing. YTBMV
