ED...use a "deadblow" or a rubber mallet and whack em...a bit more than a "soft blow" won't hurt them....but only "whack em" in a up and down motion(relative to how the engine would sit while installed in the car)...try not to whackem front to back or back to front, because you can damage the rods... J

I can get them to move a bit up and down, but they dont get free...

Will buy a big rubber mallet in the week and try again. The cylinders look as they have been used many times, so I will probably replace the whole set anyway... Its got dished pistons now (it was a bus engine) so the replacement will have flat tops and get me extra compression. Thats an added bonus for me... gas is good around here..

If they're moving up and down they should eventually pull out. When I took my engine apart a while back, two of the cylinders would not come out at first. I used a small rubber mallet to whack `em on the top a few times, then I'd whack `em on the bottom a few times, over and over. Finally, I began to see a bit of movement up and down, almost imperceptible at first. Once they started moving, I would get a good grip on the top lip of the cylinder and pull out as I alternated between hitting the top and bottom. It took a long time but I eventually got them to come out. Keep whackin'. :o)

Sorry for a stupid question, but did you remove the piece of tin under the cylinders that hold them in place?

yes.. and tossed in the trash... its a piece of tin with 2 holes wires to one of the studs. Probable the original part was misplaced in rebuild one and replaced by this contraptiojn in rebuild XX...

I will go junkjard hunting for them tomorrow.
