Restoring Hardware (nuts & Bolts)

I'm restoring a "64" bug sedan that had sat for 20 years. I'm working on the front suspension right now and was wondering what other people do about restoring the hardware (nuts, bolts and lock plates). I've sandblasted the rust off but I'm not sure about what to put on to keep it all from rusting. Does anyone cad plate at home. I know kits are available but not sure if it's worth it. I can't imagine that the south of the border hardware could compare with the german made original stuff.

Good fasteners are not hard to come by. Bolts are graded. Replace like with like.

I've found the specialty fastener drawers at Lowes hardware stores to be indispensible for finding most replacement hardware for my '71.
