Sapphire XV color codes

OK, there are 5 wires coming off the Sapphire XV that came in the parts car I bought. The speaker wires appear to be together (like twin lead), the ground is attached to a bolt on the chassis of the radio, there is a fused black lead (I assume +12V) and a blue lead (illumination/dimmer?)

This is how I hooked it up, and it doesn't appear to work. I occasionally got static out of it...am I hooking it up wrong?

Thanks,

Jay

Blue leads on a radio are usually (on modern radios) the remote power lead. This is hooked to a wire that will be hot only when the ignition is on. It controls the power of the radio so that it will turn on and off with the ignition. HTH.

Hiya Jay,

OK, here's the rundown................. brown zip wire are the leads to the speaker black wire is your power lead Blue lead is your internal light power source

There should be no ground wire. This unit was a self-grounder. Perhaps a PO has installed a ground wire just to be on the safe side?

It sounds to me as if you have it hooked up correctly. But here is one important item to consider. These 70s era radios do NOT perform like the digital wonders out on the market these days. They must have a good clean connection to a functioning antenna. Otherwise all you are likely to get is some occassional static. However, if you already do have the antenna hooked up, the radio will have to be cleaned/repaired. Should need a lead on that, zap me an e-mail.

That sounds correct to me.

You connected the blue wire to the other dash lights, right?

I actually had it on our test bench at work. It should work without the illumination... Oh well.

Thanks,

OK, well, as it turns out the test bench terminals were backwards. Once I wired it right, the thing worked!

Right. The illumination should be completely independent. If it really doesn't work and you don't have any inclination to fix it. I'd buy it from you for parts. I'd only be willing to pay for the shipping plus a bit for your effort, though.

Email me directly if you're interested.

Let's just say I'll be busy this weekend. 6 day workweeks suck. My plan is to get the stuff off it that you want back either saturday nite/sunday morning and deliver them sometime sunday. Is it cool if I take the rotten tires off the front rims? Anything to make more room would be good. I'm off Monday, so then I can worry about what *I* want off it. :)

Wow, that's pretty amazing. In most cases, wiring up a solid state radio in the wrong polarity will destroy it.

Yeah, I was pretty surprised. The terminal used to have painted rings around them but they've been worn off and it is VERY hard to tell which is which.
