Strange question #47

This is one you won't find in the FAQ.

I have just built in succession a 1776 and a 1600 stocker. Each has taken a turn in my daily-driver Baja. The 1776 is a mild engine with Kadrons over an Engle 100. Runs good. The 1600 is a DP stocker and even has a oil-bath air cleaner circa 1972. Also runs good.

The 1776 has a bit of bark in terms of intake sound. It's a nice sound, but it makes conversation inside the car problematic. When I took the 1776 out and installed the stocker (same exhaust). Suddenly I could hear the radio, my co-pilot, my co-pilots cell-phone... I like that. I think a primary reason is the oil-bath air cleaner on the stocker.

So, does anyone know of an oil-bath air-cleaner that might fit on a Kadron? This engine will be going into a type-1 Ghia.

See http://66.225.214.60/misc/kadrons/ for fitment. If I can locate a second Puma manifold, the carbs will be lower and farther to the outside, leaving more room above each carb. Max

Quit taking women offroading with you and then you won't have to worry about hearing their BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH and you can enjoy the bark of the motor. Glad I could help! ;-)

... but there's also the sound of people on the sidewalk screaming as they dive for cover. I'd really miss that.

how about a "remote" oilbath....didn't buses have them? May have to adapt thehose but could be the answer..dual oilbath filters...cool

Interesting idea. KGs got that type of aircleaner as well. I may have one off a 74...

It's close. The hose would indeed have to be replaced with something the correct size for the Kadron (bigger than the stock 34pic3) and the right shape. I could either go for one cleaner on each side or just a single cleaner with a "Y" hose of some sort.

I'll have to cogitate on that...

Thanks Chris!

if you go for the "Y" method be sure it can handle the extra flow of the larger carbs and larger engine...some older dumptrucks and such(ford f800's and such) used an oilbath filter...BUT it would likely be way too big for what you need..was about the size of a partykeg of beer...heh

The intake piping definitely transmits noise. Years ago, I had these cheapo dual carbs, kinda like ICT's, which had K&N style air cleaners. They used to get pissed on by the weather so I thought I would try extending them up by using 6" pieces of that aluminum flex tubing for the fan housing outlets. For a couple of days I could hardly hear anything - what a rap when you hammered it!

As far as rigging up an oil-bath cleaner - anything's possible given enough fabrication. The old Kadron's had the air cleaner rod attached to a bracket which was riveted onto the carb. What a pain in the ass! If you can remove it, you can use small sections of silicone rad hose (from your friendly neighbourhood freight truck dealer) and worm gear clamps (silicone-friendly versions) to couple steel tubing to the carb. Bear in mind that even steel tubing radiates some noise so it might turn out to be a big waste of time and resources.
