Super VS Standard Bug

Ok so the super is supposed to have a different front with mcpherson struts and all right? But how does it score in handling as oposed to the standard bug? Whats the main difference in the handling of an IRS super bug versus a swing axle standard? Does is handle way better or is it just a bit better? Come to think of it, why did VW make super bugs for a while and then wemt back to the original design? Im one confused volkswagenist.....

Bugs from 1969 on had the IRS rear suspension. Didn't matter if they were Super or Standard.

VW made the larger and better handling Super to try and compete with the Toyota Corolla, Ford Pinto, and other foreign and domestic compacts that were made to compete with the standard Beetle.

.........................If they had somehow found a way to modernize the front suspension without altering the external appearance of the bug, they might have been able to attract some of those Corolla & Pinto buyers without alienating their traditional customer base.

Was it any better aerodynamically?

..............I would guess that the curved windshield supers had less drag but it might not have been much better......I don't really know.

Look closer at the hood. The Standards are kind of pointed at the bottom and the Supers are wider and almost square..

"Ace" wrote except for the hood being a little flatter on top, and the windshield differences on supers, I can't find much vissual difference.

The '71 and '72 Super windshield is the same as the standard.

Scott, infact the nose in general is different.. the standard is flat, where as the super is more rounded.. more appealing to me personally.. maybe I am just biased to us supers..

Gotta love the space in the trunk, tho..especially with the hidden spare.

Well, wind noise is probably less compared to the standard.

But my '73 super sure needs some new weather stripping around the doors to fix my big contributor of road noise. Second will be some lead lining for all the floor areas.
