Swap '63 bug steering box into '72 bug

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to use a steering box out of a '63 bug in a '72 (standard) bug?

It seems that it would be a straight swap with the exception of the pitman arm which will be no problem to swap....

Thanks!

Thanks Jim for the fast reply...

Have you seen this before.... I believe the box on my '72 (baja) is bad, when moving the steering wheel you can see the pitman arm move up and down about 1/8 inch, and there is a pronounced clunk, if I push on the pitman arm I can make the clunk silence.. this is causing very loose steering and the front end is all over the road when driving.. it dosen't really shimmy.. but the steering wheel moves right to left when going down the road like you would move it when testing for play in the front end...

I have the same problem on my super. If it isn?t normal behavior, how can I solve it?

It would seem that replacing the steering box will solve this, I am fortuante to have what I think is a good used box to try....

But I don't and also I have read here that the supers steering box are very hard to fail. My idle arm is ok, because I have already replaced the bushing. Joao

Yes, you are correct; the Super box is much stronger and rarely fails.

There is an adjusting screw on top of the box accessible through a hole in the "trunk" (boot). This controls how tightly the gears mesh in the box.

Caution: If you adjust too tight, the steering will bind and the box will wear very fast.

It moves up and down because the gear mesh in the box is loose. There is an adjusting screw on top of the box, behind the metal plate which is in the spare tire well.

But if the box is badly worn, adjusting won't help much.

Thanks for your reply. I have already adjusted it once. I will check if I can adjust it a little more. As you know 90% of the time the steering works is -/+ 15º so I can not adjust it too tight when on the head position where the wear is bigger
