type 4 engine case studs -- repair?

Aug 20, 2004 2 Replies

Hello there...

We are attempting to rebuild a type 4 engine from our 1981 vanagon.

When removing the cylinder heads, several of the studs came out of the case.

It appears that some of the threads in the case are now damaged.

Can helicoils be used to repair the threads in this case?

I've also heard of case savers.. are they used in type 4 engine cases?

Just looking for some quick feedback.. thanks in advance for your advice.

Case savers are the way to go. Check out the rest of the case, though, & make sure it's good & solid. HTH, ~ Paul aka "Tha Driver"
