Finally, I started messing with jetting. The engine has this hesitation off idle. I changed the primary idle jet from a 60 to a 65. Hesitation is



80% gone. I can now lug the engine like a tractor. Very sweet. I'll try a 70 tomorrow, to see what that does.

I had back in the idle volume screw about a half a turn. It should be about 2 1/2 turns out (so they say), but due to the unconvenient location, I haven't tried to see where it really is sitting. Had to back the timing off 4 degrees, too, to avoid pinging. 009 peaks @ 32 degrees now, with 10 degrees @ idle.



So here's the question... how would I know if a 70 is too rich and I went too far? Just a hair of hesitation left running a 65. The difference between a 60 and the 65 was amazing. I fear the 70 will go too far.



Maybe I should think a malloy dist with vacuum advance in place of the bosch 009?


BTW, I think the redline K1410 progressive kit has got to be the *best* mod anyone can do to stock 1600. A bitch to tune, but a world of difference from a PICT 34 in quality of how the engine will purr. Dump the mechanical fuel pump for an electric, too.

With a 70, the exhaust note is, umm, a bit more burly.. I hate trying to use adjectives to describe sound.. It still hesitates, but in just a subtly different manner. I can't say a 70 is better than a 65 nor can I say it's worse. I really don't know. It appears to run cooler, but today's temperature is cooler anyways... So I don't know.

I guess a gas mileage comparison might do the trick. The carb is mostly in the transition area between the idle jet and the main, I think, for highway driving.
