what's the best source of body repair info for a newbie?

i am mechanically inclined, just have no experience with body work. i'm interested in both metal (i have 4 beetles) and fiberglass (i have one puma) work. interested in rust and collision/dent repair as well as paint.

i'm looking for books, videos, whatever would get me on the /right/ track the fastest.

thx!

...consider taking a class at a vocational school. Not only will "hands on" be fastest, but you will have all the equipment to playt with.

good idea, but ... that was the first thing i tried. the only classes offered in my area are daytime only; i'd need night classes to make that work. as much as i'd like to quit my day job, i'd not be able to afford the classes! :/

Kind of short on the technical info, but john henry's resto site has some fair discussion on the topic, he was a newbie bodyworker as well and he spent some time writing on the problems he worked through:

Even if it never helps you it's a fun page to read through.

If you can find a copy of Reader's Digest's Complete Car Care Manual, there is a short section (pp. 314-25) that covers the basics of simple dent and collision repair. They use color pictures and clear text to explain the fundamentals. I have several books on the subject, but this is the one that I pick up first when I need a quick refresher on what to do first. Best of all, their demo vehicle is a 1970 +/- Beetle!
