Are the front and rear pads on a 98 S70 the very same thing or completely different animals?

Completely different. The rears are much smaller, a different shape, and held in by an entirely different method.
But both are a breeze to change....

They're not that difficult - but that wasn't the question.
Two things to watch when changing the front pads.
- There is a very strong wire clip on the side of the calliper which is fairly easy to get off - but not quite so easy to put back on. [I made a hooked tool to assist]
- Removing the calliper bolts requires a 7 mm Allen key - which is a size
