The door on my 98 V70 makes a horrible noise. The hinges are fine. The middle part of the door that provides the detents and stopping(name?) has come apart inside the frame of the car. I had it fixed by a good body shop, but it lasted only 2 days and broke again. The rubber boot/cover mives and that piece isn't secure. Is this a defect that has been reported before? Recall?

This is a common problem, but no recall or anything. I'd say if your body shop's repair only lasted 2 days, they aren't as good as you think. Any independent Volvo specialist should be able to do a permanent fix for this, or look at:
A fairly good body shop can weld this for you or you could return to your Volvo dealer & they can repair for you this is a common problem with the 850 & X70 Glenn
Yup. Having my V70 drives door done tomorrow with same fault.
Broke the orignal weld on my 94 850 a number of times during its life.
