bb meets '90 245 rear window...

the multiple shattered window is pretty except for tiny hole (bb?) and now must be replaced. I called all the yards and window stores w/o any luck. Dealer wants $650 for glass. Online will sell for $450. Called several yards around Chicago, again w/o any luck. I did find a local body shop that will do it for $60 labor.

  1. Should i do vizqueen until i locate a more reasonably priced window?
  2. Can DIY work? I've done windshields & side windows.
  3. Can I replace the '90 gate with older 245 (pre-90s) whose window is smaller?
  4. Should I just pay dealer and let insurance duke it out? (got collision)

whata RIP!

I scoured the midwest from chicago to ft wayne for a replacement window for my 1990 245 wagon tailgate. Finaly, found one near Indianapolis for $150 to be FedEx-ed to South Bend. Now, i found a local body shop to install it for $60, but since I've done windhields and door windows on lotsa 240 Volvos, but *never* like the (apparently glued-in) 1990+s, should I let the body shop do it, or DIY it? What kinda glue do i need? It's getting cold!

any suggestion is appreciated (I'm not cheap, just poor)

thanks

The job is done. Unless you REALLY know how to replace the rear window on a 1990+ 245, don't even try! LESSON 1: Replacement window should have a new seal/gasket. Removing the olde butyle glue is tricky. LESSON 2: Using the quicker-hardening eurathane-glue is tricky, an air-pressure gun makes it easier. LESSON 3: You can save the old window (ornamental) seal and glue it in, but it stretches, so you'll have to custom-cut it, to meet at the wiper blade arm. Total time with tools (and experienced body worker) was 2hrs. DIY would have taken me 4-6 hrs, (and ask opinions, explore & discover "new" insights, etc. Doing this on older Volvos might be easier.

Conclusions: Dealer's $650 for glass remains outrageous. Find it at a yard for $100. If the glass is shattered, get the seal&gasket, cutting the goo-y butyl-glue is a flat-edged razor-blade tedious job. Finally, find a good body shop, willing to spend 2hrs for $60-80. Stay away from window companies who estimate labor (by book) at 5hrs and want $125-175 labor but take NO responsibility for the glass if it breaks (unless you buy it from them)... Finally, do not do an insurance claim! It only encourages them!

Case Closed. I've learned!
