Dead air pump - S70

I haven't been treating my car very well.

After the OBD gave a reading that said my SAS valve had problems, I put the problem aside since I didn't think it was a big deal. Later, my air pump started to squeal when it started. That was only heard when starting the car or sometimes when idling. Still didn't bother me.

Then, for some reason the check engine light turned itself off. That seemed odd. Now, it is back on again, and I never hear my air pump. Can I assume that it's just given out, maybe with seized bearings.

I'm ready to replace the SAS valve and air pump. Are these pretty easily accessable and replacable by an average joe? I have read the instructions on Volvospeed over and over again, and it seems doable for me.

Lastly, what are signs of a dead relay? I'd like to know whether I should order a new one with all the other parts.

The only tough part of the job is one of the bolts on the SAS valve doesn't give you much room. (That and coughing up the money for the parts.)

If the relay is dead, then the pump won't work, it's that simple. Keep in mind that your pump relay is in the box under the hood marked "Main Fuses", not like the pictures you see of the one on an 850. It's one of the yellow ones, (on my car anyway), although I forget which one. (The other yellow one does the trans computer and they're the same relay, so if you swap them, it should be obvious if there's a problem.)

An interesting read through about repairing the air pump:

Actually, that's the route I plan on going. I bought a used air pump on eBay for $47 including shipping.

air pump will definitely not work. In my head, having a dead air pump doesn't imply that the relay is dead. That's why I was asking if there was a way to test if the relay works w/o actually buying a new one yet.

Your car has 2 identical relays, one powers the air pump, the other powers the electrics / electronics for the transmission. They are side by side in the "MAIN FUSES" box. They have 4 pins, 2 somewhat larger than the other 2. I assume your transmission is working fine. Swap the relays. If your transmission is still working fine, then both relays are OK. If your transmission is not working fine, then the air pump relay is bad.

I was looking online for a new relay, and I noticed that most ads mentioned their dual usage. However, I didn't think about swapping them around as a test. Thanks for the good advice ... again.

The relay is not bad at around $55. It's certainly cheaper than the $300 for the air pump. I sure hope my used VW air pump swap works.

You're a real asset to this newsgroup and especially to S70 owners! Thanks, Mike
