i braked hard the other day in my 76 240DL and now the "idiot brake failure and handbrake failure" lights wont go out with the engine going. all systems are working ok also the alternator light comes on intermittently any ideas welcome

Bad wiring?
If you triggered the brake failure, IIRC you must unscrew the switch on the brake line junction block (behind engine, on front of transmission tunnel), then pump the brakes a few times, then screw the switch back in.
Should reset.
