starting problem 95 960

I have a 95 960 volvo. We have been having a problem with the winter mode arrow appearing and now the car will not start. Lights come on and when I turn the key I can hear a click but the starter is not turning the engine. I checked the codes and got a 313 and 114. After resetting the code the 313 came back. please advise. Thanks

Assuming you are referring to gearbox codes, 114 is open-circuit in wiring to program selector. Program selection is to do with Winter/Sports/Economy switching. The fact that it did not reappear may be due to it's being intermittent, or not having had an opportunity to re-establish itself.

313 is incorrect gear position signal. I would have a check of the gear position selector itself and the wiring involved. The general faults with this are usually earthing (grounding) faults on the four sensing wires. With 313 code the gearbox is set to "limp home" mode (4th gear only) and the diagnostic LED flashes to indicate that a forbidden combination has been received by the gearbox from the gear position sensor. Correct gear signal is derived from combinations of earths (grounds) on the four signal wires.

All the best, Peter.

How many miles? If the tranny in the '95 is like our '93 960, and the arrow flashes and the car won't start sometimes, I would suspect the PNP switch. It is a triangular switch body on the outside of the right side of the tranny with a cable that travels over the tranny to the left side of the box where it connects to a large plastic plug.

With the motor off and the key in PII and foot on the brake, try rapidly (but with sanity) shifting the lever back and forth through all the gears a dozen or two times. This sometimes cleans the contacts and can extend the life of the switch. At Volvo it costs $190 or so last time I checked. At FCP Groton it was $100 delivered.

It can be a bt of a bear to change. The exhaust is in the way and so is the tranny cooling line which can be difficult to loosen and removed (I was not able to get mine off and just worked around it at the cost of a knuckle or two.
