steering wheel rubber is drying out - can I coat with clear polyurethane?

I had the same problem on my 850. Installed a wheel wrap and problem solved.

yes, I suggest "wheelskins" or similar. The only "paint" that has a hope of working is vinyl dye, but everything will wear off of a steering wheel eventually.

well, as long as when it wears off it ends up no worse than it is now I'd like to try it. The reason I'm posting is because I'm trying to avoid the wheelskin option. My car is only a 2004 so I'd like to preserve the original interior look for at least a couple more years.

I think the next time I get a new company car I will put a steering wheel cover on it right away. I've already worn through the color of the steering wheel on my old one, and it hasn't turned 70K yet.

My complaint is not so much the exterior but that the rubber separates from the wire frame and loses that solid feel. I've wondered if epoxy could be injected with a syringe or the like to re-adhere it...

Best Volvo steering wheel I've felt was my wife old '85 245T. Small, thick and solid still!

hello Don, I have done this experiment. I have used a syringe and filled it with "super glue" or the well known cyano acrylate glue. You can easily inject this between the skin and the metal frame It worked wonderfull so far. I have done this now some 6 months ago, I still have a firm grip. But now the outside coating (grey layer) starts to wear off. I am thinking of replacing the steering wheel completely by a wooden one.... Volvo has never been great in Plastics... greetz from Belgium!

I would have replaced the wheel but the "airbag" makes that a bit problematic.

And, I agree Volvo sucks at plastics. However, that doesn't stop them from being VERY proud of them... Just look at the prices for pieces that regularly crack, chip, break, fade, shrink...
