It's a good reliable engine and probably still has a lot of life in it. To have done that sort of mileage, it will have been on the road for much of the time, and will have done a lot less cold starts than low mileage cars of the same age.

Subject to getting it professionally checked over for obvious problems, I'd seriously consider it at that price.

Still worth checking a few things though. I recently sold my 1997 V70 TDi with the same engine and 250,000 miles for £2200. Admittedly, it had oil leaking from the crankshaft oil seal (which I declared), but I think the S70 sounds a little dear. Try for £2000 !!

Check the following: Clutch. Clutch thrust bearing. Injectors (just make sure smoke isn't too bad, look in rear view mirror when dark. You should see minimal smoke in headlights behind). Cambelts changed properly. ( make sure the crank oil seals have been changed too, or make sure there are no leaks £££!). AIR CONDITIONING!! Check it works properly, i.e more than 10 minutes, listen for the compressor clutch clunking in and out, and make sure it's not every few seconds. Should be every minute or so in hot weather, less in cold. If you aren't bothered about air conditioning, then disregard this. If it all works OK, and you buy the car, MAKE SURE YOU RUN THE AIRCON EVERY WEEK, IN MANUAL CLIMATE CONTROL. MAKE SURE THE COMPRESSOR ACTUALLY RUNS!! I'm sure you're aware, but the air conditioning gas has oil in it, which pumps all around the system lubricating everything, and keeping the rubber seals supple. If the seals dry out due to lack of use, then all the gas leaks out!!

The usual things to check are brakes, CV joints, steering rack e.t.c, but I would say these are all normal checks really.

I absolutely loved my V70 TDI, and have just bought one of the new-shape V70s with the same engine in, one of the first few before the D5 engine was launched. I love it! It's only got 70k on the clock now, so I'm expecting a long life from it.

Have a mechanic check it out for you, 300K is a lot of miles for any engine, it may have plenty of life left in it or it may be just about shot.

Way too much money at £3k for 300k miles. They will do the miles but at 300k if the engine isnt shot, the gearbox / suspension will be.

Look further if you are prepared to invest further 2k - 4K £ over the first year and a half in the car else stay clear. Problems like lacking turbo pressure, worn diesel injectors, lacking oil pressure in the automatic gearbox belongs to the more expensive repairs that you must be prepared for with that mileage.
