2204 Passat Radio and On Star problem

I had to give my 04 Passat a jump start after leaving the key in the ignition for an extended period. Now the Radio is dead (not even safe mode) and On Star doesn't work. Does anyone know the reset procedure? Are there any other ideas? Thanks in advance - David

Chances are the battery went down enough to reset both. I suspect that you may end up buying a new battery as that kind of thing is very hard on a battery.

Your owner's manual should have the radio instructions. You are likely to need a code that was given the owner when the car was new and is often quickly lost. Without that it is time to see the dealer.

I suspect you will need to contact OnStar for the answer on that one.

Blown fuse perhaps?

Newer VW radios do not need entry of a code to reset the radio after a loss of power. There is a check done by the car on the radio, and if the radio info matches what is stored, the radio will enable itself a short time after the power is restored.

After you check the fuse(s), I would try disconnecting the battery for 10 seconds or more. Then re-connect the battery.

Be prepared for the alarm to go off, so you might want to have the key in the door already.

I am only guessing, and I don't have experience with this occurring on these devices. But sometimes voltage coming up too slowly does not give a proper reset to devices. Reconnecting the charged-up battery may give a good reset.

If still no joy, look to see if a broken wire coincidently happened to interrupt the power.

hmmmm time traveller? 2204 Passat and VW still has some minor problems too! lol

Try just pulling the fuse for the radio for a minute or two to see if that makes a difference. Your vehicle, if it is just a 2004, should still be under warranty. ;-) I have seen a dead radio once in a late 90s VW that died for no apparent reason. I pulled the radio out and unplugged it for a few minutes, reinstalled it and entered the code. All has been fine since. And BTW I tried pulling the fuse out for a few minutes and that did not "reset" that radio! I have repaired a few of the radios due to bad solder joints.

I bet you just need a new radio. But if you have the tools to remove the radio, do so and unplug the power connector for a few minutes. Might want to try and remove fuse first for a few minutes and see what happens. From memory it may be number 24 or 25.
