82 shifting problems

I have an 82 jetta diesel with 5 speed gearbox. It is having problems getting into 1st gear, seems to be a stuck synchro problem rather than linkage. Linkage is fine with 2 year-old bushings. I used to be able to go thru filler hole on type 1s and unstick syncro with probe and change fliud to Swepco and solve problem. Can something similar be done to the Jetta transaxle?. Any ideas what to do short of a teardown?

Could be a slide mis alignment of the linkage. Adjust it one notch to either side and see if it helps..

See if you can select another gear before trying to select first. The clutch disc may be spinning slightly which could make it difficult to put it into 1st. Using another gear should stop that disc from spinning and allow you to select 1st or reverse easier.

Not that, you can feel it hit the synchro and not go in, and the shifter linkages can flex against it. Not clutch drag either, that works perfectly

My 6 year old Jetta had a pretty dry input shaft. It did not let the clutch disk move properly so it was dragging. When was the last time the input shaft was lubed? It is not that hard of a task to do on a

1982 VW compared to a 2003 car.

I have never jammed a Rabbit or Jetta tranny but I jammed my 66 and 67 Beetle trannys. Screwdriver in the fill hole unjammed those old air cooled trannys.

another possibility would be clutch not quite releasing all the way. A1s liked to break the pedal cluster where the clutch cable stop is. good argument for replacing the clutch cable (an easy job once you've done it) as soon as you notice effort starting to increase, don't put any more stress on the pedal cluster than you have to. had that happen on my '84 roccet once, although it had about 240K miles on it so I guess it'd earned the right. if it snaps completely you have no ability to use the clutch.
